Last year, more than 3400 animals came into the care of the Geelong Animal Welfare Society, including approximately 1000 dogs.
That’s 1000 dogs surrendered, lost or neglected. Dogs who, for one reason or another, ended up in GAWS' care. 1000 dogs to assess, medically treat, feed, walk, socialise, provide enrichment and foster care, warmth and comfort, and prepare for rehoming.
Many dogs present to GAWS in poor condition. Many stay with GAWS for months, either for rehabilitation or waiting for someone to come along and adopt them. At any given time there may be hundreds of dogs in GAWS' shelter and care.
It can be an anxious and stressful time for these animals, and they need support. By giving to the GAWS Winter Appeal, you’ll be helping to provide all the necessities for their stay.

A dog’s life at GAWS
Dogs come to GAWS for many different reasons – perhaps their owner can no longer look after them, they have been abandoned, they are lost – and some have had very difficult upbringings.
No matter where they have come from, the vets at GAWS will do a full health check on arrival to make sure any urgent medical needs are promptly attended to.
Along with vital veterinary care including vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, desexing and unique treatment plans, the dogs need all the other essentials like food, water and shelter– and that can really add up.
Some dogs need to spend time in the GAWS’ foster care program for some extra TLC.
Then there are the items they need to help their stay a happy and comfortable one; toys to keep them engaged during the day and blankets and coats to keep them warm at night.
On average, it costs $55 a day per dog to cover all their medical care and essentials.
