For the month of July, GAWS is offering a discounted rate on desexing, microchipping and council registrations for cats and kittens.
The discount applies to people living in the City of Greater Geelong who hold a pension, seniors, health care or student card.
At GAWS, we strongly encourage desexing and microchipping to help prevent unwanted litters and to keep cats safe with their owners.
Discount price:
- Female felines: $130
- Male felines: $99
That’s almost half price!
GAWS partner, Advocate, is kindly providing flea and worm treatments to every cat and kitten involved in ‘Desex July’ at GAWS.

The importance of desexing and microchipping
- from GAWS Veterinarian Dr Julia Aspinall
Throughout the year, GAWS needs to constantly adapt to the high demands of the shelter arrivals and be able to assist with the varying requirements. There are certain times of the year, however, that we are pushed beyond out intake limits. The most noticeable increase in demand occurs during ‘kitten season’.
What is ‘kitten season’?
Although cats reproduce year round, kitten season occurs when the days get longer and the weather becomes warmer causing an even greater amount of female cats to come on heat. Female cats can have multiple litters per year and often have at least five to six kittens per litter.
What can you do to help?
The most important thing you can do as a responsible cat owner is to have your own animals desexed even if they are an inside animal or otherwise.
If you live in an area which has a high population of feral cats, call Geelong city council who can arrange transport for them to GAWS where they will be desexed and prepared for rehoming.
Both male and female cats can be desexed anywhere from 10 weeks old onwards.
The GAWS vets are highly experienced at this type of surgery as we perform over 2700 desexing procedures in a year!

Not only does desexing your cat contribute to reducing the cat population but it can also help prevent unwanted behavioural problems associated with hormones like inappropriate urination in the house and in some cases reduce the chances of developing hormone related cancer.
While you’re at the vet, make sure your cat is microchipped so that if they do get lost, you’ll be reunited as soon as possible reducing the impact on the amount of animals staying overnight in the shelter whilst also keeping your cat warm and safe. GAWS has microchipped over 3500 animals so far this year and we are still seeing animals coming into the shelter lost and scared with no way of reuniting them with their owners. For a small price, you could save yourself and your animal the fear and the cost of ending up as one of our lost statistics.
