We still have a fair few warm days ahead of us before the end of summer so it is important to evaluate how your pets are coping.
Here are our top tips to make sure they are staying safe and staying cool on those warm days!
Bring them in:
The easiest way to help your pet stay cool is to get them out of the heat. We understand that is not always an option… So if you can’t, ensure your pet has access to adequate shade. Note - Do not tie your dog up in the shade. As the sun moves, so will the shade. This may leave your pet in full sun and in extreme danger.
Water…
And lots of it: Ensure your pet has access to cool, fresh water at all times. Putting their water in larger containers will help the water stay cooler for longer. Also leave out several containers incase one happens to get knocked over - back up is a good idea. Wading pools are also a great idea for the pets out there that love a splash.

Be careful where you walk:
Your animal’s paws are extremely sensitive and vulnerable to hot surfaces. Place your bare hand on the ground and keep it there for 5 seconds. If it’s hot, then it is too hot for your pet. Walking your pets early morning or late evening is a great alternative when the temperatures are cooler.
Look after the little ones:
Your smaller pets are at great risk of heat exposure as they are often contained in enclosures that prevent them from moving to cooler environments like a dog may do. The best option is to bring these animals in for the day and use a small room (eg - bathroom or laundry) as a make shift enclosure for the day. If this is not possible, ensure their enclosure will be out of the sun for the day. You can also put large frozen containers of water, and wet towels inside to help keep the temperature down and give your small pet something to lay against to cool down.
Wildlife:
Leave bowls of fresh, clean water out in shady locations. Shallow dishes are better for smaller animals. If you use a large container make sure to provide a rock or stick so that small animals can climb out.
Remember: If you are hot, your pet is too! Only they need our help to stay safe…
