Kitten season is coming… we need your help!

Throughout the year, the GAWS Foster Program needs to adapt to the demands of the shelter and be able to assist with the varying requirements of incoming animals. The most noticeable increase in demand occurs during ‘kitten season’.
What is ‘kitten season’?

Although cats reproduce year round, kitten season occurs when the days get longer and the weather becomes warmer – female cats come on heat. Cats that are not desexed and that are left to roam find themselves with litters of kittens that can often found abandoned and brought into the shelter by members of the public.

What can you do to help?

If your cat is not desexed, make an appointment with our community vet clinic today! The most important thing you can do as a responsible cat owner is to have them desexed. While you’re there, make sure your cat is microchipped so that if they do get lost, you’ll be reunited as soon as possible.

You can also help by becoming a kitten foster carer!

Foster carers are supported by our dedicated Foster Care Coordinator and provided with relevant training (available online), veterinary care, pet food, bedding and equipment.

Specifically, if you are interested in becoming a kitten foster carer, it is preferred that there are no other animals in the home to provide a stress free environment for a mother and/or her kittens a safe, non-threatening environment to recuperate, grow and thrive before hitting the milestone of heading into our cat adoption centre.

Become a Foster Carer

We need a range of different foster carers with different lifestyles to meet different animals fostering needs.
