We know you see all of the adorable dogs on our website looking for homes, but have you ever wondered how we prepare a dog for rehoming?
As a non-government funded shelter, we wanted to share with our community just one way your generous donations help support and prepare the gorgeous faces up on the website for their fresh start.
For our team to understand what the perfect home looks like, they commence a comprehensive assessment of the dog’s behaviour. The assessment looks at how the dog interacts with both animals and humans and depending on the complexities of behaviours identified, a plan is devised.

The passionate and experienced team are a wealth of knowledge and together with our wonderful volunteers are able to implement modification tactics that can include:
- Positive dog on dog socialisation
- Positive human socialisation
- Lead skills
- Manners training
- Resource training
At times we have dogs that may need extra time, TLC or a quieter home setting to prepare them for the next part of their journey. This is where a stay in foster care is required.
Once the dog has kicked all its assessment goals, it heads off to our Community Vet Clinic to undergo any non-urgent surgery required. Most commonly, desexing, dental procedures or lump removals.
Now we get to the exciting part, it’s the dogs time to shine! They put their best paw forward and smile for their profile picture. They’re added to our website and presented to our GAWS community in hope that the perfect home is out there.
